Since the granting of the Most Venerable Order's Royal Charter in 1888 by Queen Victoria, the reigning monarch has continued to be its Sovereign Head. Queen Elizabeth II was Sovereign Head from ascending the throne in 1952 until her death in 2022, making her the longest serving.
