Rhodes
The fortifications of Rhodes Town were built by the Knights Hospitaller in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and still stand as a complex series of extraordinarily thick walls, tall towers and mighty gateways. The fortifications withstood many sieges with the Knights Hospitaller in defence until in 1522, after six long months, the Ottoman Empire triumphed and the Hospitallers left the island.
