Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, the Military Home Hospital Reserves was established in 1907 when the Army Council approached the St John Ambulance Brigade to ask whether they could provide a complete staff of officers for military hospitals on the Homefront. The force provided trained members who could join the Royal Army Medical Corps for national emergencies.
