The St John Ambulance Association opened its first centre in India in 1901, in Kolkata. It was initially introduced through Colonial rule and the ‘Ambulance Crusades’ that promoted the benefits of first aid across the globe. Since India’s independence from British rule in 1947, the country’s President has held the role of Head of St John Ambulance in India, demonstrating the importance of this skill to Indian society.
